How the Squire came to be
For over two centuries, the mountainous region of northern Greenville County in northwestern South Carolina has been shrouded in mystery, moonshine and mayhem. It was always an elusive place. Visitors to the area, upon asking where the Dark Corner was located, were told by natives that it was “a little further up the road.” No one wanted to admit they lived there.
Returning to the area in 1974, having spent 20 years in the outside world, I began an effort to counter the one prevailing reputation of the area–moonshine and mayhem–with a one-man promotional campaign to present a total concept of Dark Corner culture, pointing out both the richness of its history and the intrinsic scenic beauty of the region. For these efforts, the late Jim McAllister, columnist for The Greenville News, dubbed me “The Squire of Dark Corner.”
I once asked Jim why he named me the “Squire” instead of “Mayor” or some other title. I pointed out that the Squire of many English and Welsh villages was usually a fellow who had a little money but, more often than not, was the village idiot. Jim looked me straight in the eye and said, “Well?” “But I don’t have any money,” I stated emphatically.
